Diversity, Civility, and the Liberal Arts

David Blight will take part in “Diversity, Civility, and the Liberal Arts: An Institute for Faculty and Administrators at Independent Colleges and Universities” hosted by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) in Atlanta, GA, June 2-5, 2018. David Blight, along with Vivia A. Fowler, President, Wesleyan College; Jeffrey Makala, University Archivist, Furman University; and Julian M. Hayter, Associate Professor of Leadership Studies, University of Richmond, will participate in a panel entitled “Confronting Difficult Histories on Campus” in the Grand Ballroom of the Georgian Terrace Hotel in Atlanta, GA on June 4th at 10:45am.

A good deal of recent scholarship has recovered the histories of slavery, racism, and exclusion in American higher education. This session will begin with a presentation on historical memory and the selective commemoration of the past, then focus on case studies from three campuses that are confronting their own difficult histories.

Taylor, Jr. on the San Francisco Chronicle Stage in the Park.

On Sunday, May 5, from 1:30pm to 2:45pm, David Blight, along with Stephanie Jones-Rogers and Caitlin Rosenthal, will examine how the brutal history of slavery laid the foundation of American capitalism and shaped today’s racial and economic inequality.
